Who?

Channel Swimmer is 25 year old Welsh beatsmith Mathew Mayes.
Mayes has been producing since 2001 Initially making House and Techno, having had releases on labels such as Oxyd, Blowout and Cuba.
In March 2009, he took on the moniker Organ Morgan, for his new sampling project, which focussed less on the style and genre of music, and more on what can be created from his growing record collection. Tracks like Afternoon (originally titled 'Cocaine Afternoon') Broken Heart and Do Not Disturb immediately attracted attention from music blogs around the world, local DJ’s and BBC Radio DJ’s Huw Stephens, Adam Walton, Bethan Elfyn and Tom Robinson, who all gave his tracks airplay and support. He went on to produce remixes for New York’s lo-fi indie-pop hero Darwin Deez and Nashville indie outfit And The Relatives.
Later in 2009 Mayes announced that he was working on a 26 track debut album called ‘Alphabet’, with a track for each letter of the alphabet. With the album almost complete, he dropped the name Organ Morgan to the more favourable and suitable 'Channel Swimmer'. More recently BBC's Steve Lamacq has shown support playing 'Afternoon' on his BBC 6music show, whilst Huw Stephens has continued his support by airing the track during his daytime takeover of BBC Radio 1.
Still unsigned, Channel Swimmer is looking for a label as he completes his album. A 4 track EP is expected to be released next year.

“We caught up with the excellent Mathew Mayes AKA Channel Swimmer and talk all things sampling, making a racket and annoying the neighbours, taking his sound to a live arena and he gave us a full insight into how he put together his awesome track ‘Afternoon’ and plans for the future!”
Huw Stephens playing (now re-titled) ‘Afternoon’ on BBC Radio 1 around 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon (4th Jan 2011)
Sounds like you’re falling through the best record collection you’ve never heard before listening to his stuff. A remarkable creator of music, an incredible talent and obviously a musicologist.
Here’s a man who really knows what he’s doing, sculpting outrageously lovely songs with the finesse of someone who has spent their whole life immersed in great songs. This man might be my hero. A warm, golden delight. Expect big things.
Listening to Channel Swimmer is like meeting someone you feel you’ve known your whole life. Love at first listen. It makes me dream of the luxurious beach dance parties, I could and should be having, and if the guests happen to be mistaken about whether it’s the 60s, all the better.
Euphoric and melancholic, happy and sad, drunk and sober, dancey and relaxed, up and down, and all mixed together subtlety with perfect timing. Matthew Mayes has got brilliant taste. His producer releases gets to chop and sample thirty songs to four minutes, but his mixtapes allow for an expansion that is perfectly welcomed as well.
Channel Swimmer could well be what we’ve all been waiting for - a summery, ambient sound bursting with delicious sample fruits, brilliantly weaved together into slow, meandering and tranquil melodies.
Solid breakbeats and an assortment of hazy cool samples blended for the perfect weekend chill out party. Go ahead. Try not to turn this up loud.” - Pasta Primavera

eMusic approached me last month and asked me to contribute a list of Irish albums that their subscribers should have in their collection. As an avid eMusic subscriber myself for the last five years, I had kept a list of Irish albums available on the service. So I picked 20 taking into account as many genres as possible that would also represent my favourites. See the full list on the eMusic website. The end result in no particular order: [...]

Already this month there have been two exciting developments in my life. Firstly, I learnt how to create my own pasta and secondly, I heard Mausi for the first time. Whilst the prospect of delicate (and delicious) homemade spaghetti can't dismissed, I think the majority of you would much rather hear some music that has literally warmed my heart since first pressing play. The Newcastle 4-piece have already crafted a special and intriguing warmth around their imagery and visuals (the above video for their debut single sol. being a perfect example) and [...]

Remember a few weeks ago we posted about the new single from Newcastle IndiePop act Mausi , Sol.? Well, not the reMixes have hit, and theyre pretty special. Ex-Yes Giantess main man Yans, under his new Lightwaves moniker, turns in an unsurprisingly awesome ElectroPop mix aimed straight at the dancefloor. Loaded with perfect synth melodies playing against a House piano riff and some big room beats, this is the second dancefloor destroying mix Lightwaves has dropped in as many weeks, looks like its going to be his year. Tweet vaso link This is far more delayed than I might have hoped, but I enjoy making this list of my favorite songs annually, so I can return to it and see where my thoughts were within the moment. Ultimately, this list serves mainly as a compelling iPod playlist. I concluded my first list in 2009 with 111 songs, and for posterity's sake, have continued along with that tradition. The actual rankings are generally quite fluid, as I could say [...]

Following on (belatedly) from Eclectic Eavesdroppings Favourite Albums of the year, here are my Favourite Songs of 2011 . Compressing the musical year into a mere twenty-five songs is a tough task for a music junkie like myself. Listing the songs in order of preference is near impossible. But either way, Ive done my best to get a list together and even though its incredibly subjective, it sums up a very good year in music. Stream it as a playlist on YouTube over HERE or download a copy of the whole mix over HERE . [...]

Words and interview and photos by Brendan I'm so glad I got to even see Reading Rainbow play live, let alone interview them. They were one of the first bands I shared here when I started writing for Draw Us Lines, and their scuzzy-yet-pretty garage pop sound is just meant for the Brillobox stage, let's face it. Thanks to a day-of Twitter exchange about kale smoothies (or lack thereof), I was lucky enough to meet up with Rob and Sara and Al before the show, share some food and drink [...]

Magic, Magic, Music : Right here! Musical Freedom, Armada sub labels, Black Hole, or Tijs, are you ready for a gamble? As Newcastles own Polarsets have crossed the musical borderline, and are blurring those lines between reality and fiction yet again! Our list has nothing and everything to do with Earth Day, so as humans of Earth, check out what other humans have been up to. This one is dope and just in time for summer courtesy of TBE . Polarsets is an up and coming indie-electronic band from Newcastle. They have opened up for Goulding, Fenech Soler, Everything Everything and De La Soul among others. Continuing the dreamy summer vibes is a fresh remix of Newcastle band The Polarsets . These up-and-comers are signed to Kitsune and appear to be following the same route to success as label-mates Two Door Cinema Club . Their latest single Sunshine Eyes is good but Channel Swimwear has taken it upon himself to transform the cowbell infused pop number into amesmerisingelectro-haze. This is a perfect example of a remix adding value to an already decent original. Take my word for it, this is spectacular! Sunshine [...]

Polarsets - Sunshine Eyes (Channel Swimmer Mix) Remember the Polarsets? Theprogressive rock band from Newcastle that eerily sounded similar to Two Door Cinema Club. Well they're back, and with a brand new release. Called Sunshine Eyes , this is the band's first EP and ironically, it's being released bythe same record label of TDCC, Kitsun . The EP includes the Polarsets' single Sunshine Eyes and three remixes by Jensen Sportag, Kid Adrift, and Skies. Although these edits are pretty good, my personal favorites have been those not featured on the [...]

The first refeatured artist since Thoughts for Tonight began is going to be Organ Morgan. I reviewed his brilliant Avalanches-esque debut, the Cocaine Afternoon E.P. last year. This weekend he was kind enough to tweet about his new mixtape. I've been in a bit of a mixtape frenzy of late, having spent numerous hours streaming Mr. Scruff's various five to eight hour sets from his Soundcloud, so the chance to see Matthew Mayes' first under the Organ Morgan guise was met with much approval. While DJing electronic music obviously requires considerable talent - knowing when to [...]

So I'm going to start promoting a lot more lesser known bands. Major labels are just pissing me off. I was ready to post the first musicleech playlist like two weeks ago (tracklist below), but a bunch of the songs on there were from major label bands and I'm not trying to get sued so I asked them if I could include their songs on my mix and like none of them responded (it's been two weeks)... So... I'm not going to waste my time. I'm going to start posting mixes on here, with bands that actually need [...]

Playing with a downtempo, nu-jazz, trip-hop sound that isn't too much of a distraction from The Avalanches, Lemon Jelly, or Mr. Scruff, Organ Morgan should be whipping up a storm soon. I've been listening to this sampling E.P. quite heavily for a number of weeks now, and as the U.K. has finally been regraced with some sunshine, there seems like no better time. Matthew Mayes, a.k.a. Organ Morgan, has been producing dance-related music for over seven years now; having had experience with house, trance, minimal techno and ambient, with tracks released on label such as Oxyd, Cuba, and [...]

Today was a wonderful day. It was one of those days when I randomly came across some songs, and instantly fell in love with them. The heavy, heady love of the day for me is Organ Morgan . Very very very Avalanches -esque in terms of eclectic samples and that overwhelming old-fashioned feel. But really, any song that starts with "do you want to have a party? yeah, yeah!" is bound to lure me in. Listening to Organ Morgan is like meeting someone you feel you've known your whole life. Love at first listen. [...]

I've been mulling through this idea for the past couple of weeks, and finally decided to yank the plug on the weekly mixtape installment. Not saying I'm done making mixes all together, but I feel like they should be more of a novel concept. Maybe something seasonal? Not sure, don't really want to obligate myself to anything. Don't be fooled, this is not anything Robbie Charter. I'm not gonna lie, the first time I heard "Cocaine Afternoon" I thought that new Avalanches ' album was no longer in the same company as Detox or Swift and Changeable . Oh well, it's a breath of fresh air to know that Organ Morgan has the breakbeat chops to to catch my ear in nearly the same was as "Since I Left You". Mmm summer... Organ Morgan is picking up where Lemon Jelly and The Avalanches left us: wanting more! Organ Morgan is the alias of a friendly chap called Mathew Mayes who hails from my very own town of Cardiff. Some interesting tunes from a yet-to-be-released EP from experimental electronic trio Organ Morgan. As Matthew Mayes explains: "It's very much in the same vein as The Avalanches, and was heavily inspired by their one and only album Since I Left You . I personally feel there wasn't and still isn't enough of this music around...other influences include The Go Team!, Lemon Jelly, Pepe Deluxe, Hot Chip, Passion Pit and artists that aren't scared to try something new and different for a great sound.
